Even though the weather may be in denial, Spring is coming, which means it's hat season. Whether it's Easter Bonnets, Ascot headpieces or something to top off your wedding guest outfit; the season for dressing up your head is upon us. I'm always looking for excuses to buy hats from some of the wonderful headwear designers I sometimes use for styling work- here's my wishlist!
First up is the brilliant Pearls and Swine- I particularly like her Virgin Mary inspired collection (above)- they have that gorgeous Catholic, Frida Kahlo aesthetic.
Below is a beautiful piece by Diana Wyand who I actually met on a swing-dancing course. I love her vintage-inspired, moulded felt pieces.
One of my favourite new finds is Lady of the Flowers which I blogged about recently. Harriet,(below) of Bright Young Twins, makes these beautiful pre-Raphaelite pieces- I've just commissioned her to make one for a client of mine, Catherine AD who's about to go on tour supporting Ed Harcourt.
(Aimee, also of Bright Young Twins)
One of the designers I've worked with for the longest is Sabrina of Her Curious Nature- I wore this wonderful bird's nest fascinator to a wedding a couple of years ago. She's also now stocked in Topshop. Also worth checking out for perfect wedding hats is Hatastic- I love her latest collection.
The lovely Gabby Young just celebrated her birthday with a wonderful gig in London, where her bandmates surprised her with this gorgeous headpiece made by Bonzie Crotty, a fantastic Irish designer.
And more good news for hat fans!
Madcap milliner and accessory designer, Fred Butler will host an exclusive Easter Bonnet Party in Sanderson's beautiful courtyard garden on Tuesday 26th March, 6pm - 10pm.
To kick off the long Easter weekend, Fred has carefully selected a panel of leading fashion and style judges who will critique a presentation of hats created exclusively for the event. The panel will feature Vogue's Style Editor Emma Elwick-Bates, internationally acclaimed fashion blogger Susie Lau, stylists Anna Trevelyan and Margaret Crow.
Notable bonnet entrants will come from Piers Atkinson, Antipodium, Tatty Devine, Margot Bowman, Phoebe Collings-James, Phoebe English, Patternity and Princess Julia. Budding milliners and designers are encouraged to enter the competition, alongside these tastemakers, offering a fabulous opportunity to have your work seen by some of the most influential names in fashion.
The winner will be awarded a night's stay and a Mad Hatters Tea for two at Sanderson and all bonnets will be auctioned on eBay after the event with proceeds going to Kids Company.
The event will include a DJ set from a special surprise guest and a set from Fred Butler herself.
To enter a bonnet into the competition, please submit images of the hat to firstname.lastname@example.org with information about the design and inspiration.
I went to Fred's party last night and all the entries were incredible- but I thought I'd just include my favourite one, by Tatty Devine:
